Chapter Fifteen
Lottieâs earlier worries dissolved with Maxâs welcoming demeanour. He seemed to be as happy as his mum about her staying, so by the time theyâd finished their drinks out on the terrace, Lottie had few worries about them sharing the villa.
Lottie got changed for dinner. As the sun was beginning to set, she joined Max on the short walk to his parentsâ villa where theyâd laid out a feast on the patio table.
âAh, Mama, my favourite.â Max hugged Eleni and pointed to the cheese-topped dish in the middle of the table. âHave you tried this yet, Lottie?â
âWhat is it?â
âPastitsio. Itâs a sort of Greek version of lasagne. But better.â
Eleni spooned a huge mound of the meat and cheese-filled macaroni on to a plate and passed it to Lottie. She dreaded to think how many calories just that one spoonful contained, but then she tasted it and decided no diet was worth depriving herself of this.
âItâs delicious, Eleni.â
Max grinned at her from across the table.
A huge Greek salad of tomatoes, olives and thin crispy green peppers counteracted the richness of the pastitsio. There was another salad with green leaves, semi-dried tomatoes, figs and shavings of a cheese very much like manchego. Lottie was in her element and far more relaxed than sheâd been the other night with Althea questioning her. She sat back with a full stomach and a glass of wine in her hand and listened to Max talk about his life in Monaco. It was a dream world he lived in, so glamorous and far-removed from her life in Cardiff, but then heâd grown up on two islands full of luxury, beauty and romance. If heâd had such a desire to leave a place like this, it was no wonder that he ended up somewhere that rivalled it.

Lottie had already had breakfast and was reading by the pool when Max emerged. He didnât notice her as he came round the corner from their villa and peeled off his T-shirt. She watched him from behind her sunglasses. He was tall and lean but more muscular than sheâd assumed, with a smattering of hair on his defined chest, and his right arm and shoulder heavily tattooed. With just board shorts and nothing on his feet he dived straight into the pool. The splash was loud in the peace of the morning. Lottie watched him streaming beneath the water, his arms out in front. He resurfaced in the middle of the pool, stood upright and swept his hands over his face and through his hair. He opened his eyes and looked straight at her.
âMorning,â she said.
âHey there. Didnât realise you were out here already.â He swam over and rested his arms on the side of the pool. Water splashed on to the stone. His arms were tanned and toned and she could see the tribal patterns inked on his skin. She was self-conscious of his view of her bare legs in a skirt that only covered the tops of her thighs. At least she had freshly painted red toenails.
